County Armagh Wildlife Society

The Society was originally founded as Armagh Field Naturalists’ Society in 1952 by a small group of Armagh people interested in wildlife. AFNS began with less than a dozen members; but over the years grew into one of the most active field clubs in Northern Ireland. After the 50th anniversary of AFNS, the Society was reconstituted as County Armagh Wildlife Society with the intention of building on the legacy of AFNS, and continuing the tradition of natural history study and recording in Co Armagh. To this end the Society promotes a programme of events each year. This consists mainly of presentations and talks from October to March, and field outings which last through the Spring, Summer and Autumn. While the Society is principally concerned with the natural history of Co. Armagh, its field outings go beyond the County to various locations throughout Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Each year the Society publishes an Annual Report on bird, animal and insect observations gathered by the membership. The Society also undertakes some local conservation work and supports conservation charities.
