Lecale Conservation is an ongoing campaign begun three years ago by local people to safeguard the natural and built heritage of an area in South Down known as Lecale. It stretches from the sand dunes of Murlough eastwards to the Strangford Narrows and from Inch Abbey and Finnebrogue southwards to St John’s Point.

Issues that Lecale Conservation has been involved in so far include: threats to the biodiversity of the Sheepland Coast; disturbance to Minerstown’s common seal colony; water quality of the River Quoile, the need for a local biodiversity officer, wildlife crime, sustainability and management of the Strangford Lough and Lecale Partnership.

Lecale Conservation sits on the Newry & Mourne and Down Local Biodiversity Action Plan Steering Group and has made presentations to Down District Council on biodiversity and sustainability.

We meet every other Tuesday at The Mill at Ballydugan. At these meetings we plan and take action.
