Sustainable Development

Sustainable development is wide–ranging and cross–cutting in nature. It is generally defined as ‘development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs’.

NIEL Recommendations

  • Designate Government Minister with specific responsibility for Sustainable Development in Northern Ireland
  • Recognise sustainable development as a cross–cutting principle for all government departments to embed into policy
  • Development of a Communications Strategy to assist in the delivery of the Sustainable Development Strategy and its Implementation Plan
  • Showcase best practice Sustainable Development projects and initiatives to demonstrate the multiple benefits and encourage uptake of sustainability principles
