NIEL Statement on the publication of the Nature Recovery Strategy to 2032
Northern Ireland Environment Link welcomes the publication of the Nature Recovery Strategy for Northern Ireland. The Strategy comes at a critical time for nature, with continued declines in biodiversity across Northern Ireland and increasing pressures from pollution, land-use change and climate change.
Minister Muir has raised the alarm about the state of nature and the need to provide a way out of the biodiversity crisis. This is both timely and necessary. The evidence is clear that urgent action is needed to halt and reverse biodiversity loss and place nature on a path to recovery.
The Strategy provides an important foundation for that work, bringing together commitments on nature restoration, tackling environmental pressures and embedding nature recovery across government. However, publication must now be matched by delivery. Success will require sustained investment, clear accountability and coordinated action across all departments and arms of government.
Northern Ireland Environment Link urges all parties in the Executive and Assembly to commit to the Strategy’s ambitions and work together to address the interconnected nature and climate emergencies. Only through collective action can we restore nature, build resilience and secure a healthier future for people, communities and wildlife across Northern Ireland.
