NI Marine Task Force

NIEL is a member of the Northern Ireland Marine Task Force (NIMTF). NIMTF is a coalition of non–government environmental organisations, including RSPB, Ulster Wildlife, Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, National Trust, Friends of the Earth, Irish Whale and Dolphin Group. The NIMTF has the support of approximately 100,000 local people. We are working towards healthy, productive and resilient seas for Northern Ireland.

NIMTF Priorities

  • Fully implement a robust marine spatial plan for NI
  • Develop an efficient system of Marine Spatial Planning – a statutory duty to designate an effective and an ecologically functioning network of Marine Protected Areas
  • Establish of an independent Marine Management Organisation for Northern Ireland – to ensure cross–border integration and the application of the ecosystem approach to management

Members of the NI Marine Task Force are:

  • Implementation of Marine Litter Strategy
  • Implement an integrated Coastal Zone Management Strategy
  • Promotion of Shoreline Planning for Northern Ireland as a tool to manage complex issues in the dynamic coastal zone (for example, sea level rise, coastal erosion, managed realignment)

All NIMTF consultation responses, publications and reports are available on the dedicated NIMTF website: nimtf.org
