The climate crisis is one of NIEL’s core policy focus areas, as outlined in the Strategy launched in October 2024. The Climate Change Policy Working Group (CCPWG) will look to support this through its agreed purpose and mission.
Purpose:
The CCPWG will adopt NIEL’s strategic approach, that is to define and shape policy, influence key stakeholders and policy makers and track progress of policy implementation and ultimately hold government to account for delivering their legal obligations. The group’s purpose is not direct action or activism, although it may choose to engage in such activity when and where appropriate, subject to NIEL Board approval.
CCPWG will provide:
- A collective voice on climate change for NIEL members
- Collate and share relevant intelligence, information and latest developments on climate change policy with NIEL members
- Provide a feed into other climate change networks, collectives and bodies, both internally and externally, including but not limited to Climate NI, Climate and Environment Coalition, Climate Coalition UK and the UK Climate Change Committee.
The mission of the CCPWG is to deliver the following objectives on
behalf of the NIEL membership:
- To establish a coordinated NIEL response to consultations relating to
climate policy. - To influence policy makers and feed into any co-design process
during the creation of climate policy. - To ensure the delivery of clear, actionable targets for climate
recovery that align with the legislative requirements of the Climate
Change Act, supported by adequate funding for
effective implementation.
