Ulster Wildlife
Ulster Wildlife is an environmental charity whose purpose is to protect and restore nature on land and at sea. They aim to play a part in ending the climate and ecological emergencies, creating a society where nature is valued and is part of our daily lives.
Ulster Wildlife work on a number of Urban sites – some examples of their work are provided below.
Bog Meadows ‘Our People Our Places’
Ulster Wildlife is working to create a vibrant community hub centred on Bog Meadows Nature Reserve and neighbouring St. James Community Farm.
The project will help strengthen social networks, develop skills and build community capacity by offering traineeships and a range of volunteering events and education programmes based around nature, conservation, animal husbandry and gardening, all thanks to the National Lottery Community Fund.

Nextdoor Nature
Ulster Wildlife is supporting communities in South and east Belfast to help create space for nature and for people through NextDoor Nature – a nationwide community organising project, led by The Wildlife Trusts and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, to leave a lasting natural legacy in honour of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
In Northern Ireland, this includes whole streets ‘re-wilding’ their gardens, working with local groups to improve their community gardens, and running workshops so local people can learn how to encourage wildlife and help it thrive in their area.
The aim is for communities to be empowered to create small-scale nature recovery networks while at the same time gaining the well-being benefits of connecting with nature.
