Peatland Collaborative Network

The Peatland Collaborative and Technical Network was set up in 2024 with the support of DAERA, via the Environment Fund and the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation. Peatland restoration activity has been increasing across Northern Ireland, carried out by a large range of different organisations and through this Network, they now have the opportunity to work together more effectively, share knowledge and learn from the expertise of other practitioners in Northern Ireland and beyond.

Mission Statement: The Peatland Collaborative and Technical Network (PCN) promotes peatland restoration via collaboration and sharing of best practice in order to achieve a range of environmental, cultural and societal benefits.

We aim to contribute to restoration benefits including carbon management, biodiversity and habitat enhancement, flood risk management, erosion control, water quality, fire risk management, landscape quality, natural beauty, cultural heritage, rural communities and recreation.

Scope of the Network:

  • To promote peatland restoration in Northern Ireland, to help meet peatland restoration targets within the NI Peatland Strategy and aligning with the NI Climate Action Plan.
  • To collaborate and strategically plan peatland restoration projects, working collectively on landscape scale projects where appropriate.
  • To share relevant knowledge, best practice, information and research findings, and develop aligned protocols by agreement to provide a consistent approach.
  • To engage with external advisors to the Network to advance knowledge and wider collaboration with in the sector.

The PCN meets regularly at quarterly meetings, training events, workshops and knowledge sharing site visits. See below some images of recent events including an IUCN Peatland Programme local conference hub meeting, plastic dam installation training, Contractor training by the Crichton Carbon Centre and a meeting at the CAFRE site, Glenwherry Hill Farm.

We are also aiming to improve consistency in approach across NI, and are in the process of developing a number of resources and templates for use by practitioners to ensure all organisations are using reliable restoration and monitoring methods, leading to more effective restoration and more consistent and accurate monitoring and evaluation of projects.
