North West Regional College is pleased to introduce a new part-time Level 5 Foundation Degree in Environmental Management and Sustainability. A limited number of places remain available, with course induction due to take place next week. The programme has been developed for people already in employment who want to strengthen their environmental and sustainability knowledge, take on new responsibilities at work or prepare for progression into a sustainability-related role.

Sustainability is becoming increasingly important across construction, manufacturing, engineering, utilities, energy, facilities management, waste and resource management, local government and environmental services. Organisations are under growing pressure to manage energy and materials efficiently, reduce carbon emissions and waste, comply with environmental requirements, respond to customer and supply-chain expectations, and demonstrate meaningful action on sustainability.

This Foundation Degree provides practical, employer-relevant learning that can be applied directly in the workplace. Learners will develop knowledge in environmental management, sustainability reporting, carbon and resource management, energy and waste reduction, environmental monitoring, GIS and data handling, biodiversity, sustainable procurement, circular-economy principles and climate-action planning. The course also builds transferable skills in communication, analysis, project delivery and problem-solving.

Studying part-time allows employees to gain a recognised Level 5 higher education qualification while continuing in work. Employers can benefit from staff who are better equipped to identify environmental improvements, support compliance and reporting, contribute to carbon-reduction and resource-efficiency projects, and help strengthen organisational sustainability performance.

The programme includes a substantial work-based learning element, enabling participants to apply their learning to real workplace challenges. This can provide a valuable opportunity to develop a practical environmental or sustainability improvement project that is relevant to the learner’s organisation.

The qualification can support progression within an existing role or help learners move towards positions such as environmental or sustainability technician, environmental compliance assistant, carbon, energy or resource-management assistant, sustainability project coordinator, environmental monitoring officer or junior environmental consultant. It can also provide a progression route to honours-level “top-up” degrees in Environmental Management, Sustainability, Environmental Science and related areas.
