National Museums NI – CEDaR Outreach Volunteer
Description
CEDaR (Centre for Environmental Data and Recording) is the Local Environmental Records Centre for Northern Ireland and its coastal waters. Based in National Museums NI and in partnership with the NIEA, we gather and record information about local wildlife and habitats. One of our key objectives is to support species and habitat identification and to develop citizen science and environmental recording.
Often involves setting up a stall at an environmental outreach or engagement day, often for families across different public and private venues. We engage with members of the public using various specimens and informative materials to boost public engagement with biological recording and citizen science.
Hours will vary depending on events, typically events can run from 8am-4pm including set up and take down. Half days for volunteers may be offered.
Main responsibilities of the role:
- Attend events with CEDaR staff, usually to manage a stall.
- Assist with setting up and taking down event displays.
- Engage the public in a friendly manner.
- Promote biological recording via CEDaR’s website and iRecord app.
- Create a positive impression of CEDaR and its environmental work.
- Encourage people to join the mailing list and newsletter.
- Increase citizen scientist participation to improve CEDaR’s data collection.
- Network with staff and volunteers from other attending organisations.
Additional information to note:
- Events are sporadic, across weekdays and weekends, sometimes with last-minute scheduling.
- Peak event season is Spring-Summer; fewer events in Autumn-Winter.
- Most activities are outdoors, so dress for the weather.
- Branded clothing will be provided.
- Ensure confidentiality of personal contact details collected at events.
