Description
LORAG is recruiting a Heritage Engagement Officer for the Belfast Historic Waterfront initiative, a major heritage project funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The role is based at Shaftesbury Community and Recreation Centre in South Belfast and focuses on reconnecting local communities with Belfast’s waterfront heritage.
The Belfast Historic Waterfront was officially recognised as a UK Heritage Place in 2025. The project aims to place communities at the centre of protecting, shaping and celebrating Belfast’s maritime heritage. Three community-based officers across Belfast will help drive engagement and participation.
Main Purpose of the Role
The successful candidate will:
- Lead heritage engagement activities across Inner South Belfast
- Develop projects linked to the Belfast waterfront and maritime history
- Work with local residents, schools, community groups and stakeholders
- Support the development of the McConnell Weir and Lock site as an accessible river and heritage destination
- Build community capacity and ensure local voices shape future waterfront development
Key Responsibilities
The role includes:
- Delivering heritage workshops, exhibitions, walking tours and oral history projects
- Organising community consultation and engagement programmes
- Supporting waterfront events and heritage initiatives
- Developing partnerships with local organisations and stakeholders
- Managing project monitoring, evaluation and funding reports
- Supporting water-based and wellbeing initiatives connected to the waterfront
