NIEL statement on the Ulster Farmers’ Union vote of no confidence in DAERA

Northern Ireland Environment Link recognises the frustration being voiced within sections of the farming community. However, it is essential to acknowledge that DAERA is confronting environmental challenges that stem from decades of inaction and have been avoided for far too long. The problems we now face, from nutrient pollution to biodiversity loss, are the cumulative result of that long-term neglect across all sectors.

DAERA’s focus on tackling nutrient pollution, ammonia emissions and biodiversity loss reflects the urgency of these issues. Addressing them will require partnership, honesty and a shared commitment to sustainable solutions that safeguard both nature and farming’s long-term future.

Science and evidence must guide that process. Environmental recovery cannot be achieved through division or blame; it depends on collaboration, mutual respect and the shared goal of securing a sustainable future for food, nature and rural livelihoods. NIEL and its members remain committed to the ongoing collaboration process to help deliver that goal.

Only by working together can we secure a thriving countryside, resilient farming, and a healthy environment for future generations.
