The Hawthorns (Crataegus) of Britain and Ireland

Category: Talks & Lectures

Date: 3rd February 2026

Time: 7:00pm – 8:00pm

Location: Online

Hawthorns are a challenging yet rewarding group. In this webinar, we’ll explore the key identification features of our two native species, alongside their numerous hybrids – both with each other and with non-native species.

Given the sheer diversity of Crataegus, we’ll focus on those you’re most likely to encounter in the field, including difficult hybrids and commonly self-seeding introduced species from elsewhere in Europe. The session will provide practical guidance on recognising key traits, understanding hybrid variation, and developing confidence when faced with this complex genus.
