Permaculture Design Principles for Market Gardeners: A Practical Introductory Course

Category: Skills & Training

Date: 27th April 2026

Time: 10:00am – 5:00pm

Location: Ben Vista Farm, Newtownards

Permaculture is a holistic design framework that takes its inspiration from nature’s patterns to support the development of resilient, sustainable and productive landscapes that provide for human needs whilst supporting ecological functions. Furthermore, permaculture design provides
us with a toolkit for ongoing monitoring, evaluation and adjustment of our systems. In the context of agroecological market gardening, permaculture design helps to give us perspective on whole site design and management including:

  • Identification/creation and optimal use of microclimates
  • Water management/ flood mitigation
  • Soil management strategies
  • Zone planning for labour efficiency and biodiversity
  • Sector planning (identifying & working with ‘wild energies’ i.e. wind, water, frost, shade etc.)

Permaculture design is also cyclical in nature, and can be tailored to the rhythm of the growing calendar to support data-driven decision making in regard to crop planning, soil and water management.
