In Northern Ireland the designation programme for Areas of Special Scientific Interest (ASSIs) began in the 1980s. These Protected Areas, or Designated Sites represent the very best of our natural landscapes, seascapes, biodiversity and geodiversity. They form the cornerstone of nature conservation by supporting plants, animals, habitats and Earth science (geological) features that are rare, unique or representative.
In terms of the botanical features of Protected Areas; much expertise over the decades has been shared by the Vice-County Recorders and other plant enthusiasts in Northern Ireland to assist with designation and ongoing monitoring of the network.
This talk will provide an overview of designation; case studies of some of the best botanical sites in Northern Ireland; and will look to the future towards reviewing vascular plant monitoring and expanding Protected Areas.
