Northern Ireland’s State of the Environment report was first launched in 2008. It contained 30 indicators covering air and climate, water, land and landscape management, biodiversity, built heritage, and waste and resources…

The indicators were designed to assist future comparison and measurement of our changing environment, they provide the evidence base for and consultation with key stakeholders on what the challenges will be in the future and enables the development of a strategic approach for the protection and enhancement of our environment.

NIEL provided advice to the Department on a review of the State of the Environment report. Published in 2013, the report updates the current set of indicators, identifies new indicators and improves its use as tool for monitoring, reporting and protecting Northern Ireland’s environment.
