The Northern Ireland National Ecosystem Assessment is part of a UK–wide project to assess the state of our ecosystems and how we value the services that they provide…

ecosystemservices

The report provides the first analysis of Northern Ireland’s natural environment and the ecosystem services it provides and attempts to place a value on those services in economic, social and environmental terms. It considers changes over time, examines the factors driving current changes and provides recommendations on how Northern Ireland’s land and sea can be managed to ensure delivery of a wide range of benefits to enhance well–being.

It also provides an introduction to the use of the ecosystem approach to inform policy development and management decisions which can maintain and improve the ecosystem services that provide a range of benefits to residents and visitors. This ecosystem assessment exercise forms the basis for making future management decisions which enhance ecosystem health, resilience and ability to deliver many diverse services which will ensure maximum contributions to human well–being and economic prosperity.

NIEL has also produced some fact and information sheets to raise awareness of the ecosystems approach with government, policy makers and the wider eNGO sector.
