Northern Ireland Climate Action Network
(NICAN)

Terms of Reference

Mission: To facilitate collaboration and sharing between organisations working in NI seeking to promote and act on climate change issues locally and globally, with a focus on mitigation.

Status: An informal network of individuals and organisations, with an open and inclusive membership ethos.

Values: The Network and associated activities will adhere to principles of integrity, inclusivity, stewardship, equality, co–operation and transparency.

Membership: Open to all sectors and individuals who support the Mission and Values statements.

Aims

• To encourage cooperative action to promote awareness of and action on climate change in political and public spheres

• To exchange information, resources and expertise

• To identify opportunities to collaborate

• To provide a focus for joint activity for key moments

Ways of working

• Exchange of information, resources and expertise primarily online (through, for example, a Google email group). Information could be shared across the network or within working groups focusing on specific issues or project

• A steering group representing network members will meet two/three times a year

• Working groups can be formed to co–ordinate work on specific projects; membership is open to any interested network members

• NIEL/Climate NI to moderate and prompt information exchange monthly through Google email group

• All members of the network will be invited to an open annual meeting, arranged by steering group
