NIEL is a member of the Northern Ireland Marine Task Force (NIMTF), a coalition of eight non–Government Organisations who have been campaigning for better protection for our seas since 2004. In particular the NIMTF has been campaigning for new, integrated and comprehensive marine legislation for Northern Ireland through a Northern Ireland Marine Bill.

NIMTF2 NIMTF1

The aim of the NIMTF is:

For Northern Ireland to have healthy, productive and resilient seas now and into the future. NIMTF is part of a UK–wide campaign together with sister organisations in England, Scotland and Wales campaigning for effective marine legislation for all UK seas. Following the Minister’s introduction of a Draft Marine Bill in February 2012, the Task Force’s efforts have been directed towards campaigning to ensure that the Bill represents comprehensive and enforceable marine legislation. Once a Marine Bill has been passed by the Northern Ireland Assembly, the NIMTF will work to ensure the Government uses this new law to properly protect our seas.
