NIEL Recommendations for Waste

  • Target of recycling 70% of all wastes by 2020
  • Raise awareness, promote capacity building and alter behaviour and attitudes at all levels (from the public to high level decision–makers) to realise the shift from resource management to resource efficiency
  • Improve public awareness and encourage behavioural change by promoting the delivery of innovative Waste Prevention Communications
  • Promote robust regulation and enforcement to tackle environmental crime
  • Prioritise the waste hierarchy through regulation and encourage more uniform collection and recycling infrastructure across Northern Ireland
  • Encourage the development of local markets for reused and reprocessed goods
  • Assess future infrastructure requirements for Northern Ireland to ensure it is fit for purpose – taking account of factors such as, climate change/GHG emissions, energy security and prices, public behaviour, shift to resource efficiency, technology and changing government structures
