The Housing Executive has partnered with Eco–Schools NI for the 2020/21 Schools’ Energy Awareness Programme (SEEAP) Design an Eco–hero Competition. SEEAP promotes awareness of energy under the NI curriculum ‘The World Around Us‘, encouraging action through informative presentations, activities, and resources. It aligns learning objectives that support Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Our schools’ P7 and Year 8 classes were asked to design a local eco–hero under the
Housing Executive’s sponsored Eco–Schools NI topic of Energy. This topic encompasses 5 Key Topics: Energy Efficiency; Water; Renewables vs. Fossil Fuels; Climate Action; and, Global Perspectives. Click below to watch our video.

‘Every action helps and, as well as entering our Eco–hero competition, don’t forget that saving the environment is about us all working together. This is your planet Earth. It’s your future, and we need everybody to do the right thing. Millions of small actions can make a huge difference.’ Chair, Peter Roberts.

Robert Clements, Sustainable Development Manager said, ‘young people should be
encouraged to take steps to make their home more energy efficient and to help their parents save money and to save the planet.’

‘By partnering with the Eco–schools NI, we are able to engage with school children, harnessing their creative skills to promote the benefits of energy efficiency in the home’. He said ‘the incredible vision and creativity from our school children has been bought to life with great work from our illustrator, Mark Reihill.’

All of our P7s and Year 8s Eco–Hero designs were amazing!! We found it very difficult but fun to judge your 430+ entries. We even included Batman and AD Elma Newberry on our Judging Panel.

From the total entries, we selected 75 semi–finalists. We used a scoring matrix to help – did your Eco–Hero have a name, did you describe your superpowers, did you offer energy or environmental advice etc.
