Almost half a million pounds of lottery money is to be made available for tree planting and other work to revitalise a river valley near Derry/Londonderry.

The money will form part of a £1.2m project of environmental work along the banks of the River Faughan. The protected area runs from the foothills of the Sperrin Mountains to the sea just outside the city.

Faughan Valley boasts pockets of ancient woodland, a habitat which is particularly rare in Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland is one of the least wooded areas in Europe.
