Health and the Environment 3 December 2015

Environment Minister Mark H Durkan gave the opening address at the NIEL Annual Conference “Delivering Health through the Environment”

NIEL

Health and wellbeing depend upon the natural environment which supports us. Our physical, mental, and social wellbeing all rely on aspects of the natural environment. NIEL’s Annual Conference in November 2015 explored the interactions of human and environmental health and demonstrated to environment and health sectors how caring for our environment is the best and most cost effective way to ensure our personal and public health. The conference sought to:

  • Promote understanding of how a healthy environment is essential to human health and well–being
  • Progress a shared health and environment agenda for Northern Ireland
  • Explore opportunities for delivering health & well–being outcomes through environmental action
  • Provide best practice examples of utilising space to deliver health and wellbeing benefits
  • Identify steps for enhanced collaboration between health and environment sector in the future.

The conference was delivered in partnership with the Public Health Agency, the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, the Centre of Excellence for Public Health at Queens University Belfast, Belfast Healthy Cities, Space and Place, and the Ecosystems Knowledge Network.
