Green Flag at 20 parks & spaces 17 December 2013

Did you know that Northern Ireland now has 20 parks and green spaces flying the flag for the prestigious Green Flag Award!

The Green Flag Award Scheme is the national benchmark for quality public green spaces such as parks, cemeteries, woodland and open green spaces – the scheme is often considered as the annual MOT for green space. It is highly regarded and credited with being a cost effective way to raise the quality of green space and local people’s engagement with it.

The objective of the Green Flag Award scheme is to encourage the provision of good quality public parks and green spaces that are managed in environmentally sustainable ways. The Green Flag Award helps to create public recognition of good quality green spaces and in doing so aims to rebuild people’s confidence in them. The Award aspires to raise expectations of what a public green space can offer and to reassure people that the high regard they have for their public parks and green spaces is not misplaced.

The Green Flag Award Scheme is about much more than just high environmental standards. It recognises a range of factors that contribute to making a useful and vibrant green asset from health and safety practices to the involvement of the community.

Winning a Green Flag Award brings excellent publicity. Both the media and the public are becoming increasingly aware that a site flying a Green Flag is a high quality green space.
