#DefendNature Campaign 27 November 2015

Ask Government to defend the nature you love

RSPB

The RSPB has devised a social media campaign – #DefendNature – to raise awareness of the Habitats and Birds Directives over the next few weeks because in December, UK Environment Minister Rory Stewart will be going to Brussels to meet his counterparts from across Europe to talk about what needs to be done to halt and reverse the loss of our wildlife by 2020. This campaign is designed to show Rory Stewart how much public support there has been for the Directives so far. The RSPB is inviting all Environment Link members to take part in this campaign and is more than happy for organisations to adapt the materials provided if they’d like to make them their own to promote the campaign to their supporters as well.

The social media action encourages supporters to tweet @DefraGovUK with the places they’re defending, and the RSPB web team has created a button that asks people to personalise their tweets first and prevents blank tweets being sent. The campaign is fully explained in the attachment ‘RSPB campaign’.

The purpose is to tell your MP and Rory Stewart what it is you’re defending by sharing your favourite and most memorable wildlife and places, near you or even elsewhere in Europe. A button has been created (attached) that asks people to personalise their tweets first and prevents blank tweets being sent.

Here’s how you can join in:

• Write an email, from your personal email address, to your MP before 9 December, asking him or her to contact Rory Stewart so he defends the Nature Directives on behalf of the UK public on 16 December. The RSPB has built an online action with more info to help you write your email here*.

• Tweet to Rory Stewart “I’m backing Rory Stewart @DefraGovUK to #DefendNature for <<share the wildlife or place you’re defending>> Got a favourite picture of that site or species to share too? Even better.

• Take a #defendnature selfie – in front of your favourite site or species protected by the Directives.

• Share this information with your volunteers and encourage them to take action.

• Encourage friends and family with a love for special places and wildlife to join the fun and/or write an email too.
