Partnership & Collaboration

The key aspect of NIEL membership is the facility for co–ordinated action, a shared agenda and strong voice for environmental protection. Collaborative working amongst NGOs and a recognised representative point of contact and consultation are increasingly looked for by government. NIEL provides this for the environmental NGO sector.

NIEL can also help smaller organisations to “punch above their weight”. By working in partnership with a wider network they can influence and produce material they may not be able to do alone. By working together, member organisations, regardless of their size can be more effective.

A major strength of the NIEL network is its size and influence and we welcome new members to increase the breadth and strength of the environmental voice.

Policy & Consultation

Ensuring that the environment is given due recognition in the development of government policy is a major aspect of NIEL’s work. Member’s views are sought on NIEL submissions to significant environmental policies, strategies, legislation and other proposals.

NIEL influences policy in various ways:

  • Direct liaison with Government Departments, Agencies, the Assembly & Political Representatives
  • Working Groups & Task Forces
  • Seminars, Conferences, Publications

Representation

NIEL represents the environment sector on a varied range of groups in Northern Ireland. NIEL also has working relationships with the Education for Sustainable Development Forum, the Northern Ireland Archaeology Forum, the Northern Ireland Biodiversity Group, Climate Northern Ireland and Sustainable Northern Ireland.

Debate

As the umbrella organisation for the environment sector in Northern Ireland, NIEL brings together experts from different groups and provides a forum for debate, discussion and idea–sharing for the benefit of members.

Networking

NIEL is a networking body and regularly hosts conferences, seminars and other events to increase the profile of key issues in the environment sector.

Training & Professional Development

NIEL can facilitate a range of CPD services that offer bespoke training to its members, very often at competitive prices, including governance and first aid training. This training is delivered by specialists in their field and can be tailored to a member’s needs.

NIEL Facilities

NIEL has a meeting/conference room available for hire which can accommodate approximately 12 people roundtable style or up to 20 people theatre style. This room is on ground floor and is wheelchair accessible. Desk spaces are available on the 1st floor of the building in exchange for a donation to NIEL’s work. Free on–street parking, a bike rack and a bus stop are conveniently located beside the office. For more information in relation to NIEL facilities please contact the office.
