UN Sustainable Development Goals roundtable discussion: How can the SDGs support voluntary and community organisations’ work?

Thursday 7 March 2019

NICVA, 61 Duncairn Gardens, Belfast BT15 2GB

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a universal call for action on ending poverty, protecting our planet and ensuring all people can enjoy peace and prosperity. All UN member state governments, including our own have signed up to these goals. The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs have recently carried out a mapping exercise to highlight how the Programme for Government Outcomes Delivery Plan 2018/19 aligns with the SDGs.

As part of QUB placement student Emma Bramble’s project on the SDGs, NICVA is hosting a round table discussion with members who responded to the recent SDG awareness survey. The aim of the roundtable is to find out how aware organisations in the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector in NI is of the SDGs and to promote discussion around the value of the SDGs for the sector.

Discussion will be framed around the below questions:

What level of awareness of SDGs exists in the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector in NI?

How relevant are the SDGs to the everyday operations and activities to your organisation and the wider sector?

How important do you think a global agenda/international commitments are?

Are the SDGs the right way to engage people in global challenges – if yes, what are the most effective ways of using them?  If not, what other ways are there?

Are you aware of governmental work on these goals? What else could be done by the government to help the wider sector?
