The Waste Management Conference

Tuesday 25 May 2021 - 25/05/21

Online

In 2018, the government announced the 25 Year Environment Plan, outlining plans and policies to further protect the future and sustainability of the UK’s natural environment. As part of this, there was a call for improved waste management to minimise waste and achieve greater resource efficiency. Since then, a national target was announced to recycle 65% of municipal waste and to have no more than 10% municipal waste going to landfill by 2035. As the Environment Bill passes through Parliament, cross–sector collaboration between national and local government and industries is required to meet these targets and further improve waste management.

Key Statistics:

  • The UK recycling rate for waste from households was 45% in 2018, decreasing from 45.5% in 2017
  • The amount of waste sent to landfill in England rose by 4% in 2019 to 45.8 million tonnes
  • The level of remaining landfill capacity reduced by 21.1% between 2015 and 2019
  • In November 2020, the government announced a £9.2million funding package to introduce smart waste tracking and schemes to tackle fly–tipping more effectively
