The Protocol and the Environment

Monday 15 February 2021 - 15/02/21

Online

It’s now a month since the end of the Brexit transition period. New rules govern relationships between and within these islands: the Protocol on Ireland and Northern Ireland (part of the Withdrawal Agreement) and the brand new Trade and Cooperation Agreement (signed in December). What do these new legal frameworks mean for the environment in Northern Ireland, for cross–border and all/island environmental issues across the island of Ireland, and for UK–wide response to environmental challenges?

This online workshop is open to all participants interested in environmental governance, in the impact of Brexit on UK–Irish relations and UK intergovernmental relations. It brings together specialists of the new UK–EU relationship, as well as environmental policy and governance experts.

9.30: Welcome and Introductions

9.45–10.45: Understanding the new rules that govern relationships between these islands: The Protocol, the Trade and Cooperation Agreement and what it means for Northern Ireland

Prof Katy Hayward and Prof David Phinnemore, Queen’s University Belfast

11:00–12:00 What these new rules mean for the environment, in Northern Ireland, Ireland and the UK

Dr Viviane Gravey (Queen’s University Belfast) and Dr Ciara Brennan (Newcastle University, Environment Justice Network Ireland)

12:15–13:15 Where next? Mapping challenges and opportunities for the environmental sector in this new era

Participatory session: we want to know what you think, based on your own experience and expertise are the key challenges and opportunities facing the environment in this new regulatory context.

This online workshop is the first of a series of workshop organised by the brand new ESRC–IRC funded Environmental Governance Island of Ireland network co–chaired by Dr Viviane Gravey (Queen’s University Belfast) and Dr Finbarr Brereton (University College Dublin). It is supported by Northern Ireland Environment Link, Brexit & Environment and by the Environment Justice Network Ireland.
