Shovel–ready Nature–based Solutions in the UK Overseas Territories

Wednesday 16 September 2020

The RSPB is pleased to invite you to our webinar showcasing practical nature–based solutions in the UK Overseas Territories. The webinar will take place on Wednesday, 16th September at 2:30pm–3:30pm (BST).

Nature–based solutions (NbS) to climate change – when natural ecosystems are restored to sequester carbon – have gained significant international political traction recently, given that they could provide around 30% of the global cost–effective mitigation required by 2030 to limit warming to below 2°C. They are also key for helping communities meet vital adaptation needs in the face of climate change. This is particularly salient in the UK’s Overseas Territories, many of which sit on the front–line of climate change impacts from strengthening hurricanes, sea–level rise, flooding and drought.

Our webinar will bring the opportunities for nature–based solutions in the UKOTs to life, giving you the chance to hear from local voices in the territories with projects in need of large–scale funding beyond the scale of existing small project sources. You’ll discover first–hand how significant climate change mitigation and adaptation benefits can be achieved alongside biodiversity conservation, on islands which hold 94% of our unique wildlife.

Our speakers will share examples of new shovel–ready projects across the UKOTs, including in St. Helena and Anguilla, and will discuss the challenges and opportunities for the future of nature–based solutions in these dynamic landscapes.

Mrs Kedell Worboys MBE – UK Representative, Government of St. Helena

Dr Louise Soanes – Postdoctoral Researcher, University of Roehampton

Farah Mukhida – Executive Director, Anguilla National Trust
