Reviving Villages: Sowing the Seeds for a Grassroots Recovery

Wednesday 10 November 2021 - 10/11/21

Online

About this event

This workshop is designed for community groups in Northern Ireland who are interested in reusing empty historic buildings in villages with a population under 5,000 in ways that tackle rural poverty and social isolation.

The Architectural Heritage Fund is a UK–wide social investor in heritage which helps charities and social enterprises find sustainable uses for historic buildings through a combination of advice, grants and loans, with a focus on economically disadvantaged areas. Its Heritage Transformed programme in NI is supported by the Department for Communities and, since 2017, AHF has been involved in the development of the Village Catalyst pilot programme – the result of an innovative partnership between DfC and DAERA.

This has resulted in 4 pilot projects:

  • The Pat Murphy House, Ederney, Fermanagh – a co–working and well–being hub;
  • The Woolstore, Caledon – a childcare facility;
  • The Old Post Office, Gracehill – a training hotel; and
  • Chandler’s House, Rathfriland – community–led affordable housing and a flexible community arts space.

In this session, Rita Harkin, AHF’s NI Support Officer will explain how its Project Viability Grants can help to shape more projects of this kind, and create spaces and places which best serve the core needs of the communities in which they are located, restoring and re–using buildings as community assets, and bringing life back into our often neglected villages as a result.

She will be joined by social enterprise adviser, Derek Browne, who is currently engaged by Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council to help organisations find sustainable, income–generating solutions for their projects. He will share his experience of working closely with Rathfriland and District Regeneration Company on the Chandler’s House project, which is nearing completion.
