Priorities for NI infrastructure – economic recovery post COVID–19, funding and delivery, and the role of City and Growth Deals

Wednesday 21 October 2020

Online

This conference focuses on the future of infrastructure in Northern Ireland – including priorities in the wake of the COVID–19 pandemic.

It will be an opportunity to discuss priorities for a range of major projects being planned and implemented in NI.

We are pleased to be able to include in the agenda a keynote contribution from Nichola Mallon MLA, Minister for Infrastructure.

The agenda:

  • The vision for infrastructure in Northern Ireland in the wake of COVID–19
  • Delivering immediate infrastructure priorities for the new normal – developing blue/green infrastructure projects, funding, and working with communities and business
  • Ensuring the effective planning and delivery of long term infrastructure needs and projects
  • The role of City and Growth Deals in meeting Northern Ireland’s infrastructure needs and the next steps for implementation

Relevant developments – the context at a glance:

  • post–COVID–19 economic recovery – with the importance of green infrastructure and active travel cited by the Minister as part of regeneration and improvement plans
  • the creation of a Ministerial Infrastructure Advisory Panel, comprised of independent experts and key stakeholders, to support the Minister in infrastructure delivery and how the establishment of an Infrastructure for Northern Ireland might support more effectively the long term planning and development of relevant infrastructure across the island of Ireland
  • further projects across NI – including Phase 2 of Belfast Rapid Transport, the York Street Interchange project which is subject to a ‘short, sharp’ review, the Newry Southern Relief Road, and phase 3 of the Derry–Londonderry to Coleraine railway line
  • City and Growth Deals – in the Belfast City Region, Derry–Londonderry, Mid South West Northern Ireland, and Causeway Coast and Glens – with the Executive matching the UK Government’s funding
  • the New Decade, New Approach agreement –  enabling the Executive to invest in a range of capital projects including the A5 road scheme and essential sewage treatment
  • UK government commitments – to work with devolved administrations to speed up infrastructure projects and improve transport connections between different parts of the UK.
  • the Northern Ireland Investment Strategy – work beginning on the next iteration for the period from 2022
