Next steps for transport decarbonisation in the UK – low–carbon fuels, infrastructure, sector–specific targets and policy development

Friday 30 April 2021 - 30/04/21

Online

This conference focuses on next steps for decarbonisation across the UK transport system.

The conference will be an opportunity to discuss priorities for the Transport Decarbonisation Plan, being developed by government and intended for publication later this year.

The agenda looks at:

  • system–wide change – securing holistic change across the transport system
  • sector–specific targets – setting effective and achievable emissions targets for different transport modes
  • manufacturing – building up UK transport industry manufacturing capabilities for net–zero
  • EVs and the electricity network – preparing infrastructure for widescale electric vehicle deployment
  • next steps for alternative fuels and supply capacity for hard–to–decarbonise vehicles and activities
  • investor confidence and effective incentives for industry development

The discussion is bringing together stakeholders with key policy officials who are due to attend from BEIS; the CCS; DIT; DfT; the Government Legal Department; HSE; NAO; ORR; The Planning Inspectorate; DAERA, NI; the Department for the Economy, NI; and the Welsh Government.

The agenda:

  • Examining the challenges for transport decarbonisation in the UK – options for policy and action by industry
  • Developing the Transport Decarbonisation Plan – holistic design, clarity on net–zero targets, technology rollout, and taking account of behavioural and public transport developments
  • The future of low–carbon and alternative fuels – tackling barriers to scale and development, demonstrating efficiency, cost reduction opportunities, and applications across large and non–road vehicles
  • Transport electrification in the UK, and next steps for power grid readiness and whole–systems integration
  • Widening EV rollout and adoption – developing the market and industrial base, addressing cost and commercialisation challenges, and building national charging capacity
  • The policy trajectory for UK transport emissions reduction and the role of alternative fuels going forward
