GIs at the Gaol!

Monday 29 May 2017

Down County Museum

75 years ago, in May 1942 the old gaol was taken over by the 1st Armored Division of the US Army to house American GIs preparing to go off to fight in the Mediterranean – they fought their way through North Africa and Italy. Some of the men who were based at the gaol that summer visited Down County Museum in 2005 and told their stories.

Step back in time in this impressive living history event and find out more about how the GIs lived in the old Gaol! A band of experienced re–enactors will bring the summer of 1942 to life, with uniforms of the 1st Armored Division, equipment and vehicles (troop carrier and jeep) of the period. It will be possible to see a billet and a cookhouse and there will be a range of re–enactments and hands–on activities suitable for all the family.

We would also like to hear about photographs, memorabilia and memories of the GIs passed on through families to this day. If you have a 1930s or 1940s vintage car, please do bring it along and park outside the Museum! Come and join us!
