Enabling Biodiversity Net Gain in the Planning System 2022

Category: Conference

Overview

From 2023, the Government’s Environment Bill will make it a legal requirement for planning projects to achieve the outlined biodiversity net gain targets. To meet these targets, planning authorities, developers, and councils must collaborate to understand their responsibilities in the legislation and to play their part throughout the planning and development process. Across the country, stakeholders are already working to assess biodiversity needs, share data and create policies that allow them to implement positive changes and fulfil the impending biodiversity requirements.

  • According to the National Biodiversity Network (NBN), since 1970, 41% of species have decreased in abundance in the UK
  • According to a study by London’s Natural History Museum, Britain has lost more of its biodiversity than any other area in Western Europe
  • The Environment Act requires a minimum 10% biodiversity net gain for planning applications in England, which must be measured using the Biodiversity Metric
  • Only one quarter of local authorities in the UK have an inhouse ecologist or biodiversity team according to the Association of Local Government Ecologists

Join us at Enabling Biodiversity Net Gain in the Planning System 2022 to hear best practice case studies and high-level keynote speakers in the field, allowing you to develop and improve strategies to achieve biodiversity net gain in your planning system. Topics will include an update on biodiversity requirements from the Government’s Environment Bill, insights into implementing biodiversity in large development projects, and monitoring and evaluating biodiversity in the planning system. You will also have the opportunity to network with senior colleagues from across local planning authorities, sharing challenges and strategies.
