Care Farming for Mental Health

Who For: Care farmers, green care providers and prospective care farmerswho would like to offer regular, structured services to people with mental ill health as part of a health, social care or education programme.

More details:

The care farming for mental health course explores how care farming can meet the needs of those with living with mental ill health. The course will investigate how to assess local demand for this provision and how to establish relationships with potential referrers. Participants will learn the specific benefits of care farming for this service user group and how to create activity sessions that will help to bring these about and support recovery. Participants will investigate how these sessions will fit into a typical day,  how to plan over a longer period and how to tackle assessment, attendance, outcomes and progression.  The specific needs of this group regarding engagement, group dynamics and building resilience will also be discussed, together with developing your farm site to make it accessible and compatible for activities and users.

On this course you will:

  • Learn how care farming can benefit people with mental health needs, and how these benefits are linked to theories into green care and the evidence to support them
  • Look at planning your day, activity planning and facilitation for this user group
  • Learn how to use the farm / site and adapt it for people with mental health needs
  • Identify skills necessary for successful engagement with people with mental ill health
  • Understand referral, induction and assessment processes, including outcome measurement.
  • Identify further sources of support and guidance in relation to those with mental ill health, including information about the Social Farms & Gardens Code of Practice

Format:

This is a blended course, held over 2 weeks with flexible access to all learning materials and staggered live event times to accommodate different learner’s commitments to home and work. The schedule can be viewed here
