Volunteering

Volunteering is a great place to start if you're looking for a career in the environment sector. You can learn new skills, gain experience in different areas, learn about the different kinds of work available and make some crucial contacts. It can also be a satisfying and productive way to spend a few hours.

The normal view of environmental volunteering is tree planting, beach clean ups and other 'hands on' activities. While there's something very immediate and gratifying about planting trees or cleaning ponds, there is a huge range of other ways you can volunteer to help the environment eg: lobbying, admin, etc.

If you know who you would like to volunteer for, it is often worthwile contacting them directly. Most environmental organisations, including NIEL and our Members, would jump at the opportunity to get some help, especially as many are working to capacity and would like to be doing more.
