11 New Councils Confirmed 13 June 2012
Eleven new councils confirmed in law
A further step in
reforming local government in Northern Ireland has been taken as the Assembly
approved the Local Government (Boundaries) Order (Northern Ireland) 2012.
The legislation sets the boundaries of 11 new local government districts as well as the number, boundaries and names of the wards into which each district will be divided.
Environment Minister Alex Attwood said: “The 11 new local government districts have now been established in law.
“The Order has been debated and passed by the Assembly. It gives confirmation to the boundaries of the 11 new local government districts and their wards. This is a further development in moving to 11 councils.
“Northern Ireland needs a further phase of radical reform across public policy. This includes at council level where I am determined to protect the interests and needs of citizens, communities and rate payers.”
