Pollution Monitoring Using Stream and River Invertebrates
Fri 10th September 2010 - Sun 12th September 2010, Derrygonnelly
Humans may exert a profound effect on aquatic life through the influence of many activities, both past and present. Macro invertebrate species respond in a variety of ways to pollution and are, therefore, a useful tool for water quality measuring.
This course will introduce you to standard sampling techniques for stream macro-invertebrates, including kick sampling and surber sampling.
The macro-invertebrate communities of a polluted and unpolluted stream will be investigated and the use of biological indices for pollution monitoring will be explained.
Recent trends in river quality throughout Ireland will also be looked at and discussed.
Conor Clenaghan is a freshwater ecologist working for the Environmental Protection Agency. He has both professional and research experience in stream macro-invertebrate ecology.
